SIDS : Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Is when an otherwise healthy infant unexpectedly dies in their sleep with an unknown cause. Due to the unknown cause of SIDS it can’t be prevented, however there is things that can be done to reduce the risk.
- Lay your baby to sleep on his/her back.
- Put your baby to sleep on a safe surface which includes a firm, flat surface, with tight fitting sheets, such as a crib, cradle, or bassinette.
- Ensure there is no loose bedding, pillows, bumper pads, or toys are in bed with baby.
- Dress baby in snug fitting, comfortable clothing that will not allow them to overheat during sleep times.
- Room Share: place baby to sleep in safe place (crib, bassinette, cradle) in the same room as you for the first 6 months when risk of SIDS is at its highest.
- Breastfeed your baby: Breastfeeding has been associated with some protection against SIDS
- Keep a smoke-free environment before and after birth of baby as exposure to tobacco smoke can increase risk of SIDS.
Although rates of SIDS have greatly decreased, it remains at the second leading cause of healthy infant death. For more information on SIDS speak with your Primary Practitioner or your local public or community health clinic.
